The gigantic
archway near the West entrance to Coors Field is a sculpture
entitled, "The Evolution of the Ball". And is an ensamble
artwork, headed up by artist Lonnie Hanzon. Rose's part was to
create, out of terra cotta, the 108 balls, in nine different
sizes. The balls were designed with themes ranging from a
dung beetle ball, to a Rockies baseball. Along the way, such themes
as the debutante ball and Lucille Ball are explored. All the
balls are well annotated at the base and it is well
worth a stop, for a few minutes, and a few laughs. The piece was
installed just before the Rockies inaugural Coors Field season, in
